SYMPOSIUM TOPIC:
Dyslexia and English as a Second Language (including Bilingualism):
Issues, Research, Diagnosis, Instruction, and Future Directions

Symposium sponsored by the San Marcos Civic Foundation, Austin, Texas

Throughout the U.S. and world-wide, English as a second language (ESL),
bilingual, and foreign language (FL) educators must address the many
sociocultural and language issues arising from the "melting pot" phenomenon.
In many cities there are enormous numbers of non English speaking students,
both native-born and immigrants, with a certain percentage having
language-based reading, writing and spelling difficulties, i.e. dyslexia.

In this Symposium we examine some of the theoretical and practical issues
concerning ESL learners with dyslexia and/or related difficulties, and have
gathered experts from different disciplines to discuss issues, research,
diagnosis and promising solutions for educators who work with struggling ESL
learners.

The morning speakers review major themes surrounding research and practice
for all participants, including an overview of the issues, research funding
on at-risk ESL learners, diagnosing ESL learners, and a panel representing
cross-disciplinary perspectives.

In the afternoon, speakers describe structured, direct instructional
approaches and methodologies successfully used with struggling ESL learners.
