Commission on the Future of Higher Education
Education Secretary Margaret Spellings formed a new
commission, officially called "A National Dialogue:
The Secretary of Education's Commission on the Future
of Higher Education," to develop a national strategy
to guide postsecondary education in the future. Spellings
charged the commission with the task of examining how
institutions of higher education can better meet the
needs of the nation's diverse population-especially
the needs of those who have traditionally been underserved.
A critical part of the commission's work is to make
recommendations to ensure that higher education keeps
pace with the changing economic and workforce needs
of the country. The secretary also wants to ensure ample
opportunities exist that allow all Americans, including
the increasingly large segment of nontraditional learners,
to pursue lifelong learning.
The following is a webcast of testimony given on April
6 and 7, 2006, in Indianapolis, Indiana, where the agenda
included panel presentations on: access, affordability,
quality, and workforce preparation.
This webcast was paid for by the U.S. Department
of Education.
