Results of Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial
In 1993, NCI began
funding the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT), a study coordinated
by the Southwest Oncology Group to determine whether the drug finasteride
(Proscar®) can prevent prostate cancer in men age 55 and older.
More than 18,000 healthy men were enrolled at 219 sites in North America
between October 1993 and May 1997, with results to be determined after
seven years of follow-up. The trial was slated to continue through
May 2004.
